New travel rules: UAE flyers to Schengen countries restricted to 100ml liquids in hand luggage

UAE residents and tourists heading to Schengen countries will soon encounter stricter regulations regarding liquids in their hand luggage. From September 1, 2024, passengers will be allowed to carry a maximum of 100ml per container. This adjustment comes as a temporary precaution by the European Council, aiming to address a technical issue rather than any new threat.

According to a Khaleej Times report, the European Commission has stated that while some EU airports have installed Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) allowing larger liquid containers, all airports will revert to the 100ml limit. “This measure is a precautionary step, not in response to any new threat but to manage a temporary technical issue,” clarified the regulator.

Airports not equipped with the EDSCB system or already enforcing the 100ml limit will see no change. The Commission is working alongside member states and the European Civil Aviation Conference to develop swift technical solutions, ensuring a safe and secure air journey.

Finnair, Finland’s national airline, has also announced that the 100ml restriction will apply at Helsinki Airport and other European airports from September 1. Despite the limit on container size, the total amount of liquids each passenger can carry remains unchanged at two liters. Transfer passengers at Helsinki Airport will not be affected by this change.
