Escudero advises senators to refrain from discussing potential impeachment against Duterte

Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero urged his fellow senators on Wednesday to avoid commenting on the alleged impeachment moves against Vice President Sara Duterte. He highlighted that an impeachment complaint might eventually reach the Senate, where they would have to deliberate on it.

“I cannot speak on that matter, and I also want to remind my colleagues in the Senate not to comment on any rumors or stories regarding impeachment,” Escudero stated in an interview. He emphasized that according to the law, such cases could reach the Senate, and it would be inappropriate for any senator to preemptively discuss or judge an impeachment case that might come before them.

Escudero also acknowledged that pursuing impeachment could be a waste of time for both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

This comes after Vice President Duterte mentioned in a Senate interview on Tuesday that some House members were allegedly planning to file an impeachment complaint against her. Duterte expressed her indifference to the rumors, stating, “I am not at all bothered. I am bothered that they want to frustrate the choice of the people to be Vice President, all because of power and politics.”

In November 2023, House Deputy Majority Leader and ACT-CIS party-list representative Erwin Tulfo denied any discussions among House members about filing an impeachment complaint against Duterte. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. also dismissed the idea, stating that Duterte does not deserve to be impeached.
