Over 40,000 Palestinians killed in ongoing Gaza conflict, health ministry reports

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has now entered its 11th month. The violence, according to an AP report, has also resulted in over 92,000 injuries and displaced more than 85% of Gaza’s population.

The conflict escalated after Hamas-led militants launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking approximately 250 hostages to Gaza. Israel’s military response has been one of the most destructive in recent history, with significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction across the territory.

Gaza’s overwhelmed health facilities have struggled to manage the influx of casualties, and many bodies remain buried under rubble from airstrikes, leading officials to believe the actual death toll could be much higher.

Amid ongoing efforts by international mediators to broker a cease-fire, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, with a significant portion of the population facing severe hunger and a collapse in sanitation infrastructure. The conflict has also sparked fears of a broader regional war, as clashes between Israel and Hezbollah continue along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
