Colombia embraces gender inclusivity with new “X” passport option

Colombia has taken a progressive step forward by introducing an “X” gender option on its passports for individuals identifying as non-binary. The foreign ministry made this announcement on Thursday.

Andrea Garzon, an official representative from the passport service, emphasized the foreign ministry’s commitment to recognizing gender diversity. This announcement was conveyed through a video posted on the foreign ministry’s website.

This move follows a March 2022 court decision in Colombia that permitted citizens to register as non-binary on official identity documents, moving away from the traditional binary options of male or female.

Since the court’s decision, a reported 26 individuals have chosen to reflect this non-binary status on identity cards and birth certificates, based on the latest official figures.

Joining the ranks of over a dozen nations, Colombia, with its 50 million inhabitants, now stands alongside countries like Australia, Pakistan, Nepal, New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, the USA, and Mexico in offering this inclusive option.
