Carlos Yulo makes history with double gold at 2024 Paris Olympics

For the second consecutive day, Carlos Yulo, dubbed the “Golden Boy,” has made history for Team Philippines at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yulo clinched his second gold medal on Sunday night in the vault finals of men’s artistic gymnastics, following his earlier triumph in the floor exercise.

Competing at the Bercy Arena, Yulo secured the gold with a score of 15.116 for his two vaults, showcasing an increased difficulty level. His first vault, a Ri Se Gwang, earned a score of 15.433, while his second, a Kasamatsu double twist, scored 14.800. This outstanding performance placed him ahead of Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth and Armenia’s Artur Davtyan, who took bronze and silver respectively.

Yulo’s victory in the vault came just a day after he earned the Philippines’ first medal of the Summer Games with his stunning performance in the floor exercise. This marks a significant improvement for the Philippines compared to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where Hidilyn Diaz won the country’s first-ever gold medal in weightlifting.

Yulo’s double gold makes him the first Filipino athlete to win multiple medals in a single Olympics and the first to secure two golds. He joins an elite group of Filipino multi-medalists, including swimmer Teófilo Yldefonso, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and boxer Nesthy Petecio.

Carlos Yulo’s historic achievements have brought immense pride to the Philippines, marking a milestone in the nation’s Olympic history and setting a new standard for Filipino athletes.
