Distracted driver crashes into stationary taxi at Abu Dhabi pedestrian crossing

A distracted driver caused a traffic accident at a pedestrian crossing in Abu Dhabi, as captured by the city’s police road cameras. The incident, shown in a 25-second video released by Abu Dhabi Police on Friday, involves a mini van colliding with a stationary taxi.

The taxi had stopped to allow pedestrians to cross and had its hazard lights on. Despite this, the mini van driver failed to notice the taxi in time and attempted to swerve at the last moment, resulting in a crash. Fortunately, the three pedestrians at the scene managed to avoid harm by noticing the van’s approach.

The Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrol emphasized the importance of driver vigilance at pedestrian crossings. They highlighted that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility between drivers and pedestrians. Motorists were reminded to prioritize pedestrians at designated crossings and pay attention to pedestrian movements.

The authority also noted that failing to give priority to pedestrians in designated crossing areas carries a fine of Dh500 and six black points on the driver’s license.
