Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo advances in all-around and apparatus finals at Paris Olympics

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo is making significant strides towards the finals in the men’s artistic gymnastics competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As of Saturday night at the Bercy Arena, Yulo is ranked sixth in the vault and second in the floor exercise, placing him eighth overall after Subdivision 2 of the qualifiers.

To secure a spot in the all-around final, gymnasts must rank within the top 24, with a limit of two competitors per country. Similarly, the apparatus finals require a top-eight finish, also limited to two gymnasts per country. Yulo’s total score of 83.631 currently positions him eighth in the all-around rankings.

A former world champion in the floor exercise, Yulo achieved a score of 14.766 in the event, just behind Great Britain’s Jake Jarman, who scored 14.966. In the vault, Yulo’s combined score of 14.683 places him sixth. He previously placed fourth in the vault final at the Tokyo Olympics and won gold in the same apparatus at the 2021 World Championships.

Despite his successes, Yulo did not advance in the parallel bars, an event where he previously won silver at the 2021 World Championships and gold at the 2022 Asian Championships. His routine scored 14.533, with a difficulty level of 6.000, trailing behind China’s Zou Jingyuan, who leads the event with a difficulty score of 6.900.

Yulo also scored 13.066 on the pommel horse, 13.000 on the rings, and 13.466 on the horizontal bar. China’s Zhang Boheng currently leads the all-around competition with a score of 88.597.

Yulo’s final standings will be confirmed after the conclusion of Subdivision 3 later in the day.
