Death toll from Typhoon Carina and monsoon effects rises to 14

The death toll from Super Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) and the southwest monsoon has increased to at least 14, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced on Thursday.

As of July 25, the NDRRMC reported that among the 14 fatalities, six are still being validated. Additionally, there are two injured and two missing persons. Calabarzon reported the highest number of deaths with five, followed by the Zamboanga Peninsula with four.

The severe weather has affected over one million Filipinos, with 1,115,272 individuals impacted by Carina and the southwest monsoon. Despite Typhoon Carina bypassing Luzon without making landfall, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was severely hit, with over 567,000 people affected.

Currently, 51,726 people are taking refuge in evacuation centers nationwide. The agricultural sector has also suffered significantly, with 1,453 farmers affected and over 1.3 million hectares of crop area damaged, 351,590 hectares of which are irrecoverable. The estimated damage to agriculture stands at P9,706,852.34, with northern Mindanao suffering the greatest loss at P6,597.134.
