UAE launches project to enhance maritime efficiency with satellite and AI technology

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has teamed up with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) to launch the innovative Satgate project, which aims to bolster the UAE’s status as a premier global maritime hub through advanced satellite and AI technologies.

According to a WAM report, the Satgate project is designed to enhance ship location tracking, monitor sea conditions, and forecast weather patterns. By developing a comprehensive database of ships docking at UAE ports and tracking vessels without traditional tracking devices, the initiative seeks to improve maritime security and the protection of coastal facilities.

“This move comes within the UAE’s approach to leverage its leading space technologies to achieve growth and progress across the board,” stated Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. “Improving our tracking systems using advanced technology will enhance maritime transport and mitigate risks, contributing to increasing trade and transport traffic through UAE ports. Innovations in the maritime sector benefit the economy and help us achieve sustainable development by preserving and developing the marine environment.”

Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, highlighted the project’s significance in using space technology to benefit the maritime sector. “The launch of the Satgate project in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure represents a significant advancement in utilising space technology to benefit the maritime sector,” he said. He emphasized that the project aligns with the UAE’s vision of using advanced technology for sustainable development and strengthening the country’s position as a leading maritime hub.

The Satgate project is part of the performance agreements for 2023-2024, aligning with national priorities and the UAE’s development goals. By providing accurate and up-to-date data, the project supports decision-making processes and enhances the efficiency of maritime operations, further driving international investment and competitiveness in the sector.
