Public can now propose names for Dubai roads through new online platform

Dubai residents can now have a say in naming roads and streets thanks to a new online platform launched by the Dubai Road Naming Committee under the supervision of Dubai Municipality.

The “Street Designation Proposal” platform aims to involve the public in naming roads and streets across the emirate. This initiative aligns with the Committee’s goals of preserving historical legacies, promoting civilization, and keeping pace with Dubai’s future development.

The public can submit their suggestions through the website roadsnaming.ae. Dawoud Al Hajri, director-general of Dubai Municipality and chairman of the Committee, highlighted that the platform allows for public input in a structured manner, ensuring that the names reflect Dubai’s identity and heritage.

The platform encourages suggestions based on specific classifications, including names linked to Arabic and Islamic design, art, culture, natural phenomena, local flora and fauna, and elements of environmental sustainability. Names can also be inspired by historical sites, ancient architecture, traditional professions, gemstones, and modern technology.

In a trial phase, the committee has successfully named roads in the Al Khawaneej 2 area, using names of local trees, plants, and flowers, such as Ghaf Street, Sidr, Reehan, Faghi, Samer, and Shareesh.

The Dubai Road Naming Committee, established by Executive Council Resolution No. 35 of 2021, includes prominent figures from Dubai’s cultural and heritage sectors. The committee’s mission is to enhance Dubai’s national identity by reflecting its rich history, values, and culture through road names.
