The UAE has solidified its reputation as a top destination for expatriates, ranking among the world’s top 10 countries to live and work in 2024. According to a Khaleej Times report citing a recent study by global network InterNations revealed that the UAE excels in expat essentials, topping categories like administrative ease and language adaptability.
The UAE’s success in reducing bureaucratic hurdles is highlighted in the Expat Essentials Index, where it leads in the Admin Topics and Language subcategories. The study notes that while learning Arabic is moderately challenging, 80% of expats find it unnecessary for daily life. Additionally, the country’s straightforward immigration processes and minimal red tape are highly praised by expatriates.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s “Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme,” announced in February, is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to cutting red tape. This initiative aims to eliminate 2,000 procedures and overhaul numerous government services within a year.
A standout finding from the InterNations survey is that 76% of expatriates reported career improvements after moving to the UAE, the highest percentage globally and 20 points above the global average. The UAE also excels in other areas critical to expatriates, with 64% finding it easy to secure accommodation, compared to 45% globally. However, rental affordability remains a challenge, with only 37% satisfied with prices.
In terms of quality of life, the UAE ranks third globally. The country receives high marks for its environmental policies, infrastructure for cars, and political stability. Safety is another strong point, with 86% of respondents feeling politically secure, significantly higher than the 59% global average. Personal safety is also highly rated, with expatriates appreciating the low crime rates and general sense of security.
Healthcare in the UAE is well-regarded for its availability and quality, though affordability remains a concern. Leisure activities are abundant, with the UAE ranking high in culinary variety and culture and nightlife.
