Summer heatwave: UAE temperatures approach 50 degrees Celsius

The UAE has experienced its highest temperature of the summer season, with the mercury soaring to 49.9°C in Mezaira, Al Dhafra region at 3:15 pm on Friday. This reading, according to a Khaleej Times report citing the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) on X, exceeds the day’s forecast which anticipated highs of 49°C in internal areas and humidity levels nearing 90%.

The onset of astronomical summer was also marked in the UAE with the summer solstice on June 21, heralding the longest day of the year at 13 hours and 48 minutes. The intense summer phase traditionally spans from mid-July to the end of August, characterized by peak temperatures, high humidity, and frequent dust storms that can obscure visibility and impact air quality.
