X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, announced a significant change to its privacy settings, making users’ “Likes” private. This update aims to enhance user privacy and security.
“This week we’re making Likes private for everyone to better protect your privacy,” the X engineering team stated on June 12, Manila time. Users will still be able to see the posts they have liked, but they will no longer be able to see who has liked someone else’s post.
Despite this change, metrics such as like counts and other notifications for users’ posts will remain visible. The author of a post will still have the ability to see who liked their content.
X Chairman Elon Musk expressed his support for the update, calling it an “important change” in a quoted response to the announcement.
This privacy update follows another controversial decision by X to officially allow pornography on the platform. According to the new guidelines, users can share adult content if it is “consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior.” However, this content must be appropriately labeled and not prominently displayed in profile pictures or account banners. Additionally, it will be restricted from users identified as children or those who opt not to view it.
