UAE enforces new no-smoking policies to improve workplace health and safety

The UAE government, in conjunction with private sectors, has rolled out new guidelines designed to create healthier, safer, and more productive work environments by addressing smoking-related hazards. These guidelines aim to enforce no-smoking policies and support employees in their efforts to quit smoking.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced on Monday the launch of a comprehensive tobacco-free workplace guide. This initiative is part of MoHAP’s ongoing campaign to combat smoking in all forms, safeguard public health, and enhance the quality of life within work environments.

According to Gulf News, the handbook was developed by the Ministry’s National Tobacco Control Programme. It provides a detailed explanation of the measures needed to establish a tobacco-free workplace. The guide outlines the harmful effects of smoking on health and the environment, alongside the benefits of quitting.

Additionally, it offers practical advice for managers and employees on creating a smoke-free environment. This includes procedures for handling violations and steps to assist employees who wish to quit smoking.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, emphasized the importance of the guide. “MoHAP’s Tobacco-Free Workplace Guide will be a key resource for both government and private entities, helping to foster a workplace free from all tobacco products. It aligns with the UAE’s commitment to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), ratified in 2005, which aims to protect against exposure to tobacco smoke in workplaces, public transportation, and public places,” he stated.
