Choral maestro transforms UAE’s music scene with passion and dedication

Marc Misael Gamil, a 34-year-old music teacher at Al Rayaheen Charter School in the UAE, has orchestrated a life of music, teaching, and service since he moved abroad in August 2016. With a career spanning nearly eight years overseas, Marc’s journey from the Philippines to the UAE is a story of dedication, passion, and continuous growth.

Marc’s multifaceted career encompasses roles as a liturgical music composer, choral music arranger, pianist, choirmaster, streamer, and gamer. He began his overseas career as a music instructor and has since taught in numerous prestigious schools, including Repton School, Nord Anglia International School, and Gems Winchester School.

“I have been teaching in different schools as a piano and music theory specialist and a formal classroom teacher from elementary to middle school,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

His career highlights include being a pioneer member of the Dubai Opera Festival Chorus, performing at notable events like the BBC Proms at Dubai Opera and Andrea Bocelli’s sold-out concert at Yas Island. Marc also founded the all-male Filipino choir, Chorus Omnis, which performed at the House of Piano alongside well-known classical artists.

“I conducted the Filsoc Chorale during the ‘Paskong Pinoy sa World Expo’ in December 2021,” he recalls proudly.

Passion for teaching and music

Marc’s love for music and teaching is evident in his dedication to his students.

“As a musician and a music teacher, I have never been happier to see my students enjoy and prosper in life because they learned music,” he says.

He believes in the profound impact of music, describing it as a language that only the heart understands.

Marc’s commitment extends beyond the classroom. He founded the social media platform, Music Teachers of the Philippines, to connect educators, share expertise, and offer professional development. His role as a choirmaster at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and his performances during significant events, like Pope Francis’s visit to the UAE, underscore his deep connection to his community and faith.

Like many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Marc faced numerous challenges when he first arrived in the UAE. He started alone as a bedspacer, working hard to support himself and his family back home.

“My parents are sickly, and as the years go by, I know that my time with them is becoming limited. I miss my parents so much,” he shares, reflecting on the sacrifices he has made.

Despite these struggles, Marc persevered, gradually bringing his loved ones to the UAE. He also overcame personal challenges, including a nearly broken relationship, finding solace and guidance through his faith. Today, he lives with his wife and daughter in Al Ain, having built a stable and fulfilling life abroad.

Looking ahead, Marc and his wife are still considering their long-term plans, whether to stay in the UAE, migrate to another country, or return to the Philippines. He is focused on saving and investing for the future, with aspirations to continue his impact on music education.

“My social media presence will stay, and I am planning to make more impact through music education, which I will be launching soon online,” he reveals.

Marc offers sage advice for fellow Kabayans struggling abroad.

“We all start low. Sometimes we feel embarrassed about our current state, especially since many people expect us to be the breadwinner. We just need to work on our path and plan things to achieve in the years to come,” he advises.

He emphasizes the importance of saving, finding positive relationships, and serving the community.

“Join a group, especially a choir, if you want to improve your mental health and build good relationships. Serve the Lord in the church if you are religious,” he suggests.

A community leader

In addition to his professional achievements, Marc is a respected community leader in the UAE. He has learned to embrace change and celebrate the successes of those around him.

“Over the years, I have learned to let go of people when they need to part ways with me and to be welcoming to a new set of people who are willing to work with me,” he reflects.

His philosophy of celebrating others’ triumphs and maintaining a positive outlook has been instrumental in his success.
