Filipino educator honored as New Mexico’s Teacher of the Year, celebrated at White House event

Dr. Roy Basa, originally from Murcia, Negros Occidental, has been recognized as Teacher of the Year by the New Mexico Public Education Department and the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association. Basa, who teaches technical education and science at Twin Buttes Cyber Academy, is celebrated for his innovative teaching methods that emphasize collaboration with various institutions and industries.

According to a GMA News Online report, his approach has led to significant student achievements and garnered him this prestigious recognition. “Winning in any endeavor is never an ‘I’ but rather a ‘We’ victory,” Basa remarked, dedicating the award to his family and students.

Basa’s journey in education began in the Philippines, where he spent 15 years teaching at Negros Occidental High School’s Night Class Department and served as a part-time professor at local colleges and universities. His contributions to education have earned him numerous accolades, including the 2024 Award for Continuing Excellence and Service from the Metrobank Foundation in the Philippines, the SHELL Urban Science Educator Development Award in 2023 and 2024, and the 2023 Outstanding Science Educator Award from the New Mexico Academy of Science.

In recognition of his achievements, Basa joined 54 other State Teachers of the Year at a White House dinner hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden on May 2, 2024.
