Air passengers can now carry extension cords and power strips in their hand luggage

In a move to enhance passenger convenience, the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) announced on Thursday that air travelers can now bring extension cords and power strips in their carry-on luggage. This policy change, effective from May 15, aligns with the Department of Transportation’s commitment to ensuring seamless travel experiences.

According to GMA News Online, the decision was made after the OTS received numerous complaints from passengers regarding the previous restrictions. Extension cords were traditionally required to be checked in, which caused inconvenience for many travelers.

“OTS strives to improve its policies to provide balance between security and passenger convenience in line with Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista’s guidance to provide comfortable, accessible, safe, sustainable, affordable, and seamless travel for all,” the OTS stated.

It’s important to note that while extension cords and power strips are now permitted, other items such as firearms, sharp objects, worker tools, blunt instruments, chemicals, and liquids in containers exceeding 100 ml, remain prohibited in carry-on baggage. The list is under review as the OTS continues to refine its security measures.
