Over 50% of Filipino Gen Zs favor working alone, new report shows

A recent study by PhilCare revealed that more than half of Filipino Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, prefer working independently rather than in team settings. According to the “PhilCare Wellness Index: An Updated ABC of Pinoy Gen X, Y, and Z,” 55% of Gen Zs express a preference for independent work environments.

PhilCare’s president and CEO, Jaeger Tanco, commented on the findings, stating, “While working in a team environment is not an issue for Gen Zs, the desire to work independently is perhaps their way to showcase their skills and abilities to their employers, as well as how much they value freedom and self-direction in their careers.”

The study also highlighted that a similar sentiment is held by 50% of Gen X (born 1965 to 1980) and Millennials (born 1981 to 1996), who also prefer working independently.

Furthermore, the report found that 48% of Gen Zs are interested in working abroad, compared to 54% of Gen Xs and millennials who prefer to stay in the Philippines. Tanco noted that the younger generation is seeking international opportunities to experience new cultures and personal growth, enhancing their competitiveness in the global job market.

Clinical psychologist Rainier Ladic, in an interview with GMA News, explained that Gen Zs’ inclination towards living and working abroad might be influenced by their familiarity with technology and greater awareness of global economic conditions.
