Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is discontinuing its COVID-19 vaccine globally, as reported by the Telegraph on Tuesday, May 7.
The decision follows the voluntary withdrawal of the vaccine’s “marketing authorization” within the European Union, rendering it unusable in the region.
The initial application to withdraw the vaccine, known as Vaxzevria, was submitted on March 5 and officially took effect on May 7.
Similar withdrawal applications are expected to be filed in the UK and other countries that had previously approved the vaccine in the upcoming months.
