After 75 years of data, UAE experiences its highest rainfall in a single day

The UAE experienced unprecedented rainfall on Tuesday, April 16, marking the highest recorded in a 24-hour period since records began in 1949. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reported that Khatm Al Shakla area in Al Ain saw the most significant downpour, with rainfall reaching 254 mm.

This record-breaking event surpasses the previous highest record at Shuwaib station, which recorded 287.6 mm in March 2016. The NCM described the rainfall as a rare event in UAE’s climate history, contributing significantly to the annual rainfall average and boosting the country’s groundwater reserves.

The intense weather, triggered by a low surface pressure system, affected the country from Monday, with two waves of unstable weather conditions sweeping across the UAE on Tuesday. Despite challenges posed by the weather, authorities and residents collaborated effectively to ensure safety and manage the situation.
