A major infrastructure project in Dubai, aimed at significantly improving traffic flow, has reached a 75% completion milestone, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The initiative, known as the Intersection of Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads Improvement Project, involves the construction of four new bridges, covering a total length of 2,874 meters, and designed to support a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour.
The ongoing construction has seen the completion of foundations and columns for the bridges. The current phase of work includes casting bridge walls, installing iron supports, expanding roadways, enhancing lighting, and establishing rainwater drainage networks, alongside necessary traffic diversions to facilitate the project’s completion. One of the primary bridges is slated for completion in the second quarter of this year.
This project is conducted under the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, overseeing its progress. It is designed to upgrade Garn Al Sabkha Street, linking Sheikh Zayed Road with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, to ensure smooth traffic between major roads and support Dubai’s growing urban and population demands.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, highlighted the project’s benefits, stating, “Once opened, the project will cut down the distance and the journey time by 40 per cent for traffic heading from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira, and reduce the peak hour journey time from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes. It will also diminish the journey time by 70 per cent from 21 minutes to 7 minutes for traffic going from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road rightward to Al Yalayis Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port.”
