During the holy month of Ramadan, offices and schools across the UAE adjust their schedules, leading to shifts in daily traffic patterns. A study conducted by a Dubai-based insurance company, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd, and RoadSafetyUAE, reveals that motorists should exercise extra caution between 1pm and 4pm, the peak period for road accidents during Ramadan. Analysis of 1,320 motor insurance claims from March 22 to April 20, 2023, highlights that Wednesdays see the highest incidence of accidents, while weekends are considerably safer.
The research indicates that 35% of accidents occur from 1pm to 4pm, with the late morning rush hour also posing a significant risk. Age-wise, individuals between 30 to 39 years are most at risk, closely followed by those in the 40 to 49 age group. Factors such as dehydration, low blood sugar, and altered sleep patterns during Ramadan can impair drivers’ attention, concentration, and reaction times, contributing to the increase in accidents.
With over half of the accidents involving a third party at fault and 36% involving shared fault, the study underscores the need for heightened awareness and caution among all road users during the fasting month. RoadSafetyUAE emphasizes the importance of defensive driving, planning for delays, and ensuring proper rest to avoid fatigue. The organization also encourages the use of public transport or taxis when possible, to reduce the risk of accidents during this period.
