Using rice to dry wet phones could actually harm the device, Apple warns

Apple has debunked the widely circulated myth that placing a wet iPhone in a bag of rice can help dry it out. The tech giant warns that this method can actually harm the device, as small particles of rice may damage the iPhone. This clarification comes in response to the viral spread of TikTok and Reel videos advocating the rice method as a quick fix for water-damaged phones.

Apple’s support documents clearly advise against the rice method. “Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” the document states. Instead, Apple has provided detailed instructions for users on what to do if their iPhone comes into contact with liquid, including steps to follow if a “liquid detected” alert appears when attempting to charge the phone.

The company outlines that if liquid is detected in the Lightning or USB-C connector, or on the cable or accessory, the iPhone will automatically disable charging and accessory connections to prevent damage. Users are advised to dry their iPhone and accessories thoroughly before attempting to charge or connect again. Apple also suggests using a wireless charger as a safer alternative if the device needs charging while still damp, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the back of the iPhone is dry before placing it on a Qi-certified charger.

For those who encounter a liquid detection alert, Apple recommends unplugging the charging cable, gently tapping the device against a hand with the connector facing down to remove excess liquid, and waiting at least half an hour before attempting to charge the device again. If the alert persists, the device should be left in a dry area with good airflow for up to a day.

Additionally, Apple cautions against using external heat sources, compressed air, or inserting any foreign objects into the connector as methods to dry the iPhone. These actions can cause further damage and potentially worsen the situation.
