70% of UAE residents prefer digital wallets for transaction during trips

A recent study by Visa, the global leader in digital payments, reveals that 70% of UAE outbound travelers prefer using digital wallets for transactions during their trips. The 2023 Global Travel Intentions Study highlights the growing trend of digital payments among UAE residents aged 18-55 who have traveled abroad for leisure in the past year and plan to continue their travels.

According to the study, intra-regional travel is most popular among UAE travelers, with trips to the Asia Pacific and Europe also favored. The research underscores the UAE’s strong travel sector and a significant shift towards digital payment methods, enhancing consumer confidence and travel experience.

Salima Gutieva, Visa’s Vice President and Country Manager for the UAE, emphasized the study’s reflection of a robust travel sector and the increasing shift towards digital payments. Visa aims to cater to the evolving needs of global travelers with secure, convenient, and innovative payment solutions, offering privileges and discounted offers to enhance travel experiences.

The study also found a surge in travel activity among UAE outbound travelers, with India, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia being the top destinations. Despite rising travel costs, the enthusiasm for travel remains strong, with travelers prioritizing relaxation, family visits, and adventure. The preference for independent travel over packaged tours highlights the desire for flexibility and control over travel arrangements.

In terms of spending patterns, families with older children emerge as the biggest spenders, while Gen Z travelers tend to spend the most before their trips. Digital wallets have become a crucial part of spending abroad, with affluent travelers using them 16% more than average. The study also addresses payment concerns before trips, including card acceptance and currency conversion costs.

Sustainability is another key finding, with 73% of travelers aware of eco-friendly travel options, though access to information remains a challenge.
