7-year-old dies after accidental shooting involving sibling in Manila

A 7-year-old boy in Manila tragically died after being accidentally shot by his 13-year-old brother, who had found their father’s service firearm in a drawer. The father is a police officer.

According to a report on GMA News’ 24 Oras, the Manila Police District (MPD) Homicide Section’s investigation revealed that the older sibling discovered the gun and accidentally discharged it. The bullet passed through a cabinet and into a neighboring room, striking the younger child in the side while he was sleeping.

The boy was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

MPD Homicide Chief Police Captain Dennis Turla explained, “The drawer was opened, and the firearm was discovered. For reasons unknown, the gun fired, hitting a cabinet before the bullet went through to the other room where his brother was sleeping.”

The grieving father expressed sorrow over the loss of his youngest child and concern for his older son’s emotional well-being. “Don’t blame yourself,” he told his son, adding, “What happened is very difficult to accept. It’s heartbreaking.”

The father may face administrative and criminal charges following the incident.
