40% of global jobs to face disruption due to AI in the coming years

At the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Kristalina Georgieva has warned that approximately 40 per cent of global jobs will face disruption due to artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming years. However, she noted that the UAE stands prepared to tackle this challenge head-on.

Georgieva emphasized the profound impact AI will have on various sectors, likening it to a “tsunami hitting the labour market.” She urged countries worldwide to bolster their readiness for AI adoption, highlighting the UAE’s advanced preparedness compared to many other nations.

Addressing over 100 leaders from AI companies at WGS 2024, discussions revolved around solutions to empower governments in navigating AI’s challenges while harnessing its potential for positive transformation.

Additionally, Georgieva shed light on the economic repercussions of the Gaza conflict, describing it as “devastating” for the region. The conflict has significantly disrupted economic activities in Gaza and the West Bank, with far-reaching implications such as reduced tourism and increased freight costs.

Georgieva stressed the urgency of resolving the conflict to mitigate its lasting economic impact on the region, emphasizing the need for a durable peace and political solution.
