A funeral bus tragedy in southwestern Kenya has left at least 25 people dead after the vehicle overturned and plunged into a ditch on its way from Kakamega to Kisumu.
According to regional traffic enforcement officer Peter Maina, the bus lost control at high speed as it approached a roundabout, veered off, and rolled into the opposite lane before crashing into a ditch. “The vehicle lost control, veered, rolled onto the other side of the road,” he told reporters at the scene.
Among the dead were 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl. Medical services principal secretary Fredrick Ouma Oluga confirmed that 29 passengers were initially rushed to hospitals, but four later died from their injuries.
The crash occurred along a stretch of road notorious for frequent collisions, reigniting calls for stricter road safety enforcement in the country. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause, with investigations still underway.
The deadly incident adds to a string of recent transport tragedies in Kenya, including an air ambulance crash in Nairobi that killed six people and separate road accidents that claimed 17 more lives in other parts of the country.
Road accidents remain a serious problem in Kenya, where poor road conditions, narrow lanes, and speeding drivers continue to claim lives.
