A 20-year-old Saudi student studying in Cambridge has died following a fatal stabbing late Friday night, prompting shock in the local community and drawing international attention.
Emergency services rushed to Mill Park in Cambridge shortly before midnight on August 1 after reports of violence. The victim, Mohammed Al-Qasim, was discovered with serious stab wounds and, despite efforts by paramedics, was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. the following morning.
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that two men have been arrested in connection with the incident. A 21-year-old man is being held on suspicion of murder, while a 50-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain under police investigation.
Authorities stated that Al-Qasim, who had been in the UK for a 10-week academic placement, was the victim of an “unprovoked attack.” No motive has been disclosed.
Detective Inspector Dale Mepstead of the Major Crime Unit acknowledged the public’s cooperation so far. “We would like to thank the public for their support and assistance following our appeal,” he said, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
EF International Language Campuses, the school where Al-Qasim was enrolled, expressed sorrow over the loss. “We are deeply saddened at the death of one of our adult students,” the institution said in a statement. “The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority.”
The school confirmed it was cooperating with law enforcement and had initiated counselling services for affected students and staff.
The quiet residential street where the incident occurred—known for student housing—has since become a site of mourning. Flowers and handwritten messages were placed at the scene, including one that read, “May your soul be at peace,” alongside a Qur’anic phrase often used in times of grief: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon.”
Authorities have urged witnesses or anyone with information to reach out through www.cambs.police.uk or call 101, referencing Operation Brackley. The investigation is ongoing.
