An 18-month-old girl was fatally mauled by a pit bull inside her family’s home in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday afternoon. The toddler had wandered away from a teenager who was supposed to be supervising her when the dog attacked, officials said.
The child was immediately rushed to University Hospital but sadly succumbed to her severe injuries. The Essex County prosecutor’s office described her wounds as “horrific and serious” from what appeared to be a canine attack.
Animal Control has since removed the pit bull, along with another dog, from the home. Investigators are now looking into whether the second dog was also involved in the attack, according to reports.
The incident has left the local community in shock. “It’s the most horrific thing that can happen to anyone on earth,” said neighbor Kawhon Jahyne.
The Essex County prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the tragic event.
