A 15-year-old boy from Liloan, Cebu, who risked his life to save dozens of neighbors trapped in rising floodwaters during Typhoon Tino, has been awarded a full scholarship by local officials in recognition of his heroism.
Jayboy Magdadaro, a resident of Sitio Fatima in Barangay Jubay, became a symbol of courage after rescuing more than 50 people as his community was inundated by floodwaters when the Cotcot River overflowed on November 4. Using a small boat and a lifebuoy, the teenager ferried stranded residents to safety amid the storm’s strong current.
Moved by his bravery, Mabolo Barangay Captain Atty. Daniel Francis Arguedo announced that Magdadaro will receive a full scholarship for any course of his choice, including coverage for school fees and a ₱3,000 monthly allowance.
The young rescuer, who has been an active Sangguniang Kabataan volunteer even before the typhoon, has since been praised online and by local officials for his selfless act, with many calling him an inspiration to the youth.
