A Dubai-based teen had his vision restored after suffering a severe eye injury that nearly caused permanent blindness. The 15-year-old Indian student, Dhikshit Kottiyattil Anoop, was injured on June 20, 2024, when a ballpoint pen accidentally struck his right eye during a school incident, leading to immediate pain and a sudden loss of vision. Dhikshit was transferred to Aster Hospital Mankhool, where a team of specialists performed two critical surgeries to save his sight.
The next day, Dhikshit underwent an emergency surgery conducted by Dr. Parth Hemantkumar Joshi, Specialist Ophthalmology at Aster Hospital Mankhool. The procedure, which involved repairing a deep corneal tear and removing damaged tissue, was successful, stabilizing the boy’s condition. Despite the surgery, Dhikshit later developed a traumatic cataract—a common complication in severe eye injuries.
On July 25, 2024, a second surgery was necessary after Dhikshit’s vision deteriorated significantly. The procedure involved the removal of the cataract and the implantation of an artificial lens. Dr. Parth, along with Dr. Gazala Hasan Mansuri, Specialist Ophthalmology, performed the complex operation, which also included a vitrectomy and iridectomy. The surgery lasted about 1.5 hours and restored much of Dhikshit’s vision, despite the severity of the damage.
Dr. Parth described the case as particularly challenging due to the extent of the injury and the development of the cataract. “Our main goal was to preserve as much vision as possible and prevent further complications. We are pleased with the outcome and relieved that Dhikshit is recovering well,” he said.
Mrs. Greeshma Anoop, Dhikshit’s mother, expressed her gratitude to the medical team at Aster Hospital. “We were very scared, but the doctors’ confidence and swift action gave us hope. We are incredibly thankful for their expertise, which has saved my son’s vision,” she said.
Pediatric trauma cases like Dhikshit’s account for 18.9% of all trauma cases, with 63.9% involving severe eye injuries caused by sharp objects. Traumatic cataracts, which occur in 29-60% of such cases, present a significant challenge in treatment, often leading to long-term complications. However, thanks to the prompt and expert care provided at Aster Hospital Mankhool, Dhikshit’s sight has been largely restored, preventing what could have been a life-altering disability.
