Fourteen high school students in Tokyo were hospitalized on Tuesday after consuming “super spicy” potato chips, according to local media reports.
According to an AFP report, over 30 students at a Tokyo high school were sharing the chips during recess when several began experiencing nausea and intense pain around their mouths.
All 14 students were conscious when taken to the hospital, although one was in such severe condition that they needed to be transported in a wheelchair, Fuji TV reported.
The chips, branded as “R 18+ Curry Chips,” were brought to school by a male student who had previously eaten them and found them “super spicy.”
The manufacturer’s website states that these chips, which contain ghost pepper, are banned for individuals under 18 and can cause pain. The website also warns against consumption by those with high blood pressure, weak stomachs, or those deemed “timid.”
Emergency services, the school, and the chip manufacturer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
