10-year-old Filipina takes gold in prestigious Jiu Jitsu event in Abu Dhabi

Filipinos abroad continue to triumph in various fields, showcasing their dedication and talent on international stages. In the world of Jiu Jitsu, a remarkable example is a 10-year-old Filipina who has shown exceptional skill and determination.

Born and raised in Abu Dhabi, Naomi Agatha Pascual triumphed at the Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Jiu Jitsu Championship, winning a gold medal on June 29, 2024.

Starting her Jiu Jitsu journey in April 2021, she has quickly risen through the ranks, highlighting her commitment and prowess in the sport.

“I began practicing Jiu Jitsu with my dad, Marvin Pascual, and my sisters. After a few training sessions, I fell in love with the sport and started competing,” Naomi shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Her family’s involvement, including her mom, Anna Liza Pascual, and younger brother, Avin Yehoshua Pascual, has been a significant source of support and motivation.

Naomi’s journey in Jiu Jitsu began with her first gold medal at the UAE Kids Refresher Championship in 2021.

Reflecting on her latest achievement, she said, “Winning the gold medal at the Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Jiu Jitsu Championship was an incredible experience. It’s another milestone in my Jiu Jitsu journey, and I am overjoyed with the love and support I received.”

The Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship, organized by the UAE Jiu Jitsu Federation, is a significant event that draws athletes from various backgrounds, showcasing the best in the sport.

Training twice a day, five days a week, Naomi balances her rigorous practice schedule with homeschooling and church activities.

“The best part about Jiu Jitsu is the way it allows me to put into practice the principles that I’ve learned at church and in homeschool,” she explained.

For Naomi, the support from her family, her SGGI church, her Al Jazira Jiu Jitsu Team, and the Simply the Best (STB) family has been instrumental in her success.

“God is the one who brought me to this point. My family, church, and coaches continually inspire and motivate me to do my best.”

Naomi’s advice to young athletes is to “always honor your parents, work hard, and believe in yourself. With dedication, support from your loved ones, and a passion for what you do, you can achieve great things in sports. Keep pursuing your dreams and never give up!”
